A UK Passport lasts 10 years for adults and 5 years for children. In years past, children were authorized to be listed on their parent's passport, but now they have to have their own documents.
Renewing a UK Passport is easy to do. If you are simply renewing a passport, the process can be completed online through the Identity and Passport Service, also known as IPS.
The requirements to renew online are that you must be an adult with a 10 year passport or a child under 16 with a 5 year passport. The passport must not be damaged and you must not be changing your name.
IPS does not require the old passport to be expired. Your passport can be renewed at any time and will be effective no more than nine months before the expiration date.
Once your new passport is issued, your old passport will be deactivated and will no longer work. You will be required to send in two pictures with your passport application.
Should you look much different from the last time your passport was issued, you must have the passport form countersigned for security purposes. The individual who countersigns must have known you for at least two years.
If you are to travel in the next two weeks you will want to use the urgent passport application. This requires going to a regional passport office for renewal. The IPS website will give details on where to go.
In August 2008 new biometric passports were introduced to the UK. These passports rely on facial recognition where a scanner verifies the identity of an individual.
Anyone over 18 with a biometric passport is able to take advantage of using these gates at the airport for ease of travel.
Since the UK is switching to this machine readable facial recognition technology, new adult passport applicants will have to visit their local passport office for an interview.
Since the UK is one of the remaining countries that allow passports to be done through the mail, this will be a new experience for many.
Renewing UK passports does not require the biometric technology to be in place. These electronic readers are making security easier for many travelers at the airport.
